Neeraj Chopra, Olympic gold medalist, breaks his own national record

India’s Olympic gold medal-winning javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra on Tuesday broke his own national record at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland.

With a best throw of 89.30 meters, the 24-year-old was awarded silver in the event. With an 88.07-meter throw in March, he broke the previous national record.

Chopra’s first competitive event after just over a year was nothing short of spectacular, as he came close to breaking the coveted 90-meter barrier, which is regarded as the gold standard in the world of javelin throwing.

He started with an amazing 86.92m and then sent the spear to a distance of 89.30m. His following three throws too were fouls, but his sixth and last effort resulted in an 85.85m throw.

Finland’s 25-year-old Oliver Helander 88.02 meters personal best of 80.36m was a surprise winner with the best gold winner with the best throw of 89.83 meters throw he scored in his second attempt.

Chopra’s 89.30 m performance puts him fifth on the world’s best list of the season.
