Northeast floods: 11 lakh affected in Assam, 4 kids killed in Meghalaya landslide

Heavy rain lashed large swathes of northeastern India on Friday, including Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, magnifying the flood situation in several places.

The India Meteorological Department forecast more downpour in the region over the next 5 days.

According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 11 lakh have been impacted due to rain and floods in 25 districts of the state.

At least 4 people died in floods and landslides in the state in the last 24 hours. The district authorities have opened 124 relief camps and 46 relief distribution centres.

The current wave of floods has impacted 1,702 villages, and forced more than 68,000 people to take shelter. 

Besides, 46 relief centres have been opened in various places for distribution of food and medicines.

NDRF, SDRF, Fire and Emergency Service personnel, the police and ASDMA volunteers are carrying out evacuative drive in the affected areas on war-footing.

So far, 5,840 people have been safely evacuated, ASDMA officials stated.

In Meghalaya, 4 minors, including 2 boys and 2 girls, died after their house collapsed in Laitlarem, Nongspung circle in Shillong.

A 25-year old woman was killed after her house collapsed in Jashiar village in West Khasi Hills district.

According to the district administration, one residential house was destroyed by the overflowing mud.

In Tripura, Train services have been disrupted for the past one month due to torrential rain.
