Nupur Sharma, the controversial Hindutva politician on Saturday skipped summons issued by the Kolkata Police after a complaint was filed against her for the derogatory remarks she made about the prophet Muhammaed last month.
Sharma wrote an email to Amherst Street police station, citing apprehensions that she will be assaulted if she visits Kolkata, an unidentified officer told the PTI news agency. The suspended BJP leader also sought time of four weeks to appear before the police officers.
The Amherst Street police station in Kolkata had asked Sharma to join the investigation on 25 June. Earlier on June 13, Sharma was issued summons and asked to appear before the Narkeldanga police station on or before June 20. However, she had skipped the questioning by citing security concerns.
Nearly a month ago, Nupur Sharma, made derogatory remarks against the prophet during a primetime debate on one Times Now. Sharma’s comments were soon backed by another BJP leader, Naveen Kumar Jindal, who tweeted in her support and made similar remarks.
The remarks set off protests by thousands of Muslims across the country and triggered a diplomatic backlash against India after a number of Muslim-majority countries summoned Indian envoys and demanded an apology.
