Udaipur: Congress points to 2017 Afrazul murder to counter BJP’s “Muslim appeasement” remarks

Hitting out at the Bharatiya Janata Party over its claim that terror outfits are flourishing in the Rajasthan due to Congress’ “appeasement policy” towards Muslims, Congress said that those talking of appeasement forgot the brutal murder of Mohammed Afrazul by Hindu militant Shambhulal Regar.

“Those talking of appeasement forget that in 2017 in Rajasthan’s Rajsamand district, Shambhu Lal Regar had made a video while murdering someone and people of a particular party had climbed atop a court complex in his favour and hoisted their flag after removing the tricolor,” Congress’ media department head Pawan Khera said on Wednesday.

In Rajasamand, Rajasthan, 36-year-old Shambhulal Regar hacked a 50-year-old Afrazul and burned his body. Regar claimed he killed Afrazul “to save a Hindu woman from becoming a victim of “Love Jihad”. Love Jihad is a term coined by Hindutva groups to accuse Muslim men of entrapping Hindu women on the pretext of love in order to eventually convert them to Islam.

Regar even roped in his 14-year-old nephew to film the killing and later circulated the video on social media. In one of the three videos, Regar rants against Muslims, calling them “jihadis”, and blaming them for the drug trade, fake currency, and movies that insult Hindu figures.

In a report by NDTV, Regar was quoted as saying that he did not regret killing Afrazul. A video of him, which he had claimed he made from inside the Rajasthan prison where he was lodged, had surfaced in which he stated clearly what his intention was with regard to the killing of Afrazul. Regar was also seen spreading hatred against minorities in the video clip.

In scenes that disturbed many, over three dozen Hindutva men “honoured” Shambhu Lal Regar. He was deified in a procession taken out on the occasion of Ram Navami.

Khera who condemned the recent brutal murder of a Hindu man Kanhaiya Lal in Rajasthan’s Udaipur’street area by two Muslim men, asserted that the Ashok Gehlot government in Rajasthan was aware of its “raj dharma” and said action in the brutal killing of a tailor would be taken in accordance with the law, unaffected by the religion or caste of those involved.

The duo murdered Lal in Udaipur and posted videos online, claiming that they are avenging an insult to the prophet Muhammed by BJP leader Nupur Sharma.

“With the atmosphere being vitiated in the entire country for the last two months, Gehlot has been urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah that they address the country, take steps to stop the spread of hatred in society, and appeal for maintaining peace,” Khera said.

Khera alleged that polarisation is evident in every nook and corner of the country, and asked why this was not the case earlier. The Congress spokesperson asserted that whoever is found guilty in the probe, the strictest action will be taken against that person  “There should be no doubt regarding that.”
