Boris Johnson resigns as UK prime minister

Boris Johnson on Thursday announced he would quit as British prime minister after he was abandoned by ministers and most of his Conservative lawmakers.

After days of political crisis, Johnson spoke outside Downing Street to confirm he would resign.

In the last few days, more than 50 ministers quit and lawmakers spoke against the scandal-ridden prime minister.

Boris Johnson said he has appointed a new Cabinet while he remains as UK prime minister until a successor is chosen.

“His resignation was inevitable,” Justin Tomlinson, deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, said on Twitter.

“As a party we must quickly unite and focus on what matters. These are serious times on many fronts.”

Initially, Johnson refused to go and sacked ministers who turned against him. But last 24 proved he had no options left.
