Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa flees to Maldives

Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, his wife and two bodyguards fled the country on Wednesday on a Sri Lankan Air Force plane to Maldives amidst chaotic widespread protest.

The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka refuted reports claiming that India helped the president and his younger brother Basil Rajapaksa flee the country.

“High Commission categorically denies baseless and speculative media reports that India facilitated the recent reported travel of @gotabayar@Realbrajapaksa out of Sri Lanka. It is reiterated that India will continue to support the people of Sri Lanka,” official handle of High Commission of India in Colombo tweeted.

Sri Lanka’s parliamentary speaker could receive President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s resignation letter by midday on Wednesday, a top ruling party source told Reuters news agency.

Hundreds of protesters continue to occupy the official residences of the president and the prime minister after both buildings were stormed on Saturday.
