Supreme Court grants protection to Nupur Sharma from arrest in FIRs on Islamophobic remarks

Supreme Court grants interim relief to former BJP Spokesperson Nupur Sharma, and directs that no coercive steps be take against her in the FIRs/Complaints registered over her derogatory remarks on the prophet Mohammed or on FIRs/Complaints which may be registered in future.

The top court earlier said it will correct to a small extent its earlier ruling on the controversial Hindutva figure’s petition seeking protection from arrest and clubbing of nine FIRs against her.

“We will correct it to a small extent. We never wanted you to go to every court,” said a bench of Justices Surya Kant and JB Pardiwala.

The apex court also issues notices to Union and states on her petition for clubbing of FIRs.

Case to be heard next on August 10.

Earlier, while refusing to entertain her plea, the same bench had said Sharma’s remarks led to unfortunate incidents and ignited emotions across the country.

Multiple FIRs have been filed against her for her anti-Islam comments on the prophet Mohammed made on national television.
