“Will give a better model than UP. Even for encounter”: Karnataka minister

Two days after the BJP leader Praveen Nettaru hacked to death in Karnataka, a minister declared that Karnataka BJP government could go “five steps ahead of Uttar Pradesh” and carry out encounters targeting the accused.

“They will be arrested but it’s the wish of our workers and people that such incidents shouldn’t happen. According to their wish there will be action, the culprits will be caught, they will be nabbed. Whether that is going to be encounter, we will go five steps ahead of Uttar Pradesh. We will give a better model than UP. Karnataka is a progressive state and a model state, we don’t need to follow anyone,” NDTV quoted Karnataka Higher education Minister Ashwath Narayan as saying.

Narayan’s comment came a day after Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, while speaking about the killing, had said that the state government will implement the “Yogi model” on law and order if such a situation arises, referring to his Uttar Pradesh counterpart.

“The time for encounters has come,” the minister told reporters.

After Nettaru’s killing, several Hindutva activists criticised the Karnataka government and accused it of inaction.

The chief minister has handed over the case to India’s top anti-terror body, the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Meanwhile, a Muslim man Muhammed Fazil was hacked to death last night in Mangaluru by masked attackers. Social Democratic Party of India and other Muslim groups alleged that the Hindu militant group Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is behind the killing of Fazil.

The “Yogi model” is seen to describe draconian actions like draconian charges against the accused or the razing of their houses using bulldozers. The BJP government’s crackdown is directed at only Muslim community in the state and has been used in other BJP-ruled states to target Muslims.
