Rahul Gandhi detained; Congress leaders protest across the country

Several Congress MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor, were detained on Friday while marching from Parliament to Rashtrapati Bhavan in protest against issues of inflation, unemployment and GST on food items.

Security has been tightened in several places and Section 144 has been clamped down across the National Capital, except Jantar Mantar.

“This dictatorial government is scared. From the condition of India, from the backbreaking inflation and historical unemployment, from the ruin brought by our policies. He who is afraid of the truth threatens those who raise their voice!,” tweeted Rahul Gandhi.

“Despite protesting peacefully, with no hint of violence or misbehaviour, Congress MPs have been detained at Vijay Chowk and are being carted off to a police station. This is unnecessary and undemocratic,” tweeted Tharoor.

Congress Working Committee (CWC) members and senior leaders had planned to take part in “PM House gherao” while Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs will hold a “Chalo Rashtrapati Bhavan” from Parliament, the party said in a statement.

The Delhi traffic police has issued an advisory saying the traffic movement will be affected in parts of Lutyens’ Delhi.
