Munawar Faruqui’s show: Telangana cops detain BJP MLA, secure venue

The Hyderabad police on Friday detained BJP MLA T Raja Singh following his repeated threats to not allow stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui’s show. The MLA was trying to go to the venue of the show Friday morning when he was taken into preventive detention.

A few of his supporters were also detained by the police.

Security has been tightened near the venue in Madhapur. Barricades have been erected and police will question everyone who enters the venue, according to reports.

Police had granted permission for Faruqui’s show ‘Dongri to nowhere’ scheduled to take place at Silpa Kala Vedika on August 20.

However, it’s not yet clear if the show will go on as scheduled. The stand-up comic wrote on Instagram that his Bangalore show has been deferred to next Friday due to his ill health. He said that he has taken a COVID-19 test, the result of which is pending.

Faruqui has not officially confirmed the status of the show in Hyderabad.

In December 2021, Telangana Minister K T Rama Rao offered an open invite to Munawar Faruqui to perform in Hyderabad after his show was cancelled in Bengaluru over threats from Hindu groups.

He was trying to convey the message that Hyderabad was more tolerant and metropolitan than Bengaluru and welcomed him to visit Hyderabad and criticise the government.
