US journalist who made Shaheen Bagh documentary, deported from Delhi airport

US citizen and journalist associated with American news and entertainment company Vice Angad Singh was allegedly deported from the Delhi airport Wednesday night.

“My son an American citizen who travelled 18 hours to Delhi to visit us in Punjab was deported,” Gurmeet Kaur wrote on Facebook. “Put in the next flight back to New York.”

She also claimed that the authorities did not cite any reason for deporting her son.

“But we know it is his award winning journalism that scares them,” her Facebook post read. “It is the stories he did and the stories he is capable of. It is the love for his Motherland that they can’t stand.”

“It’s not easy to be a Sikh, a Gursikh on top, a journalist, a warrior of truth and justice. Speaking truth has a price. We must pay it,” she wrote further, adding the post-script, “So which story do you think pissed them off?”

Singh, who works as a documentary producer for Vice News, had come to India for a family reunion.

“A US-based journalist of ‘Vice News’, Angad Singh, who had produced a documentary on Shaheen Bagh protest was deported from Delhi airport immediately after reaching India. He had come for a family visit. This is the state of world’s so-called largest democracy,” read a tweet by professor Ashok Swain.

A family member said to Indian Express that Singh had been denied a visa recently to make a documentary film about Dalits in the country, however, this time around, he was visiting for personal, not professional, reasons.
