Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, dies aged 96

Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, has died at the age of 96.

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

Queen Elizabeth II’s eldest son Charles, 73, has automatically become king of the United Kingdom and the head of state of 14 other realms including Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
