Union to set up panel to study conversions of Dalits to Islam, Christianity

The Narendra Modi government is constituting a national commission to study the social, economic and educational status of Dalits who converted to Islam and Christianity.

The proposal to set up such a panel is being discussed at the Union, and a decision is likely to be taken soon, Indian Express reported.

Ministry of Minority Affairs and the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has given the green signal for such a move, the newspaper said, citing sources.

The Indian Express report states that it has learnt that the proposed panel may have three or four members with its chairman holding the rank of a Union Cabinet Minister — and a possible timeframe of well over a year to submit its report.

This comes amid dozens of petitions are pending before the Supreme Court of India seeking SC reservation benefits for Dalits who converted to Christianity or Islam.
