Supreme Court to hear plea of Azam Khan against state action on Muhammad Ali Jauhar University

The Supreme Court agreed to hear on Thursday a plea of Samajwadi Party senior leader Azam Khan against the alleged takeover and other unjustified actions of the Uttar Pradesh government against the Muhammad Ali Jauhar University at Rampur.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justices S Ravindra Bhat and J B Pardiwala on Wednesday took note of the submissions of senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Khan, that the state has been taking several actions against the private university, news agency PTI reported.

“Subject to clearing of all defects and objections, list the matter before an appropriate bench tomorrow (Thursday),” Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit said.

Kapil Sibal said Azam Khan has been facing several criminal and other cases lodged by the State Government and other authorities and now the university has been taken over. Azam Khan who had spent 27 months in jail, is also facing several other cases of alleged corruption and money laundering.

Muhammad Ali Jauhar University is a private university established in 2006 by trust and Khan is its chancellor.

Mohammad Ali Jauhar University on the outskirts of Rampur town seems to have become a victim of political vendetta, with the state government having acquired 173 acres of the university land, out of a total of 350 acres, and registered it as government land in the state revenue records.
