The Kerala Police booked nine activists of the Popular Front of India (PFI) in Thiruvananthapuram and Idukki districts, who allegedly shouted slogans in support of the banned Muslim outfit, under provisions of the draconian UAPA.
First incident occurred in Idukki district on Wednesday.
In the Nedumkandam area of Idukki district, seven PFI activists had carried out a march on Wednesday shouting slogans in support of the outfit and against the RSS. A case was registered against them on Thursday under the UAPA for carrying out the procession, a senior police officer of the district told PTI.
No one has been arrested in the Nedumkandam case as visuals of the incident are being perused to identify the PFI activists, police said to the news agency.
The Union government had banned PFI, one of the prominent Muslim outfit, on 27 September and the next day, a leader of its Kerala unit had made a statement that the outfit has been disbanded.
Kerala, where the PFI has some strong pockets, had accounted for the maximum number of 22 arrests under draconian UAPA in the NIA action last week.
The second incident occurred Thursday morning when a group of seven PFI workers had gathered in Kallambalam in Thiruvananthapuram district to remove a flag hoisted near a shop in the wake of Union government ban. Among seven, two were arrested and booked under UAPA.
Besides the two, there are five others who were present there and whom the police are searching for, cops said to reporters.
Earlier in Thursday, Kerala government had issued a notification delegating its powers to all district and police chiefs to take action against the organisation.
Accordingly, district magistrates and police chiefs can freeze the funds of the banned outfit, seal their office premises and ban the use of movable assets.
This mandatory step would give powers to all the district magistrates and the police superintendents to implement the ban order in their respective jurisdictions.
