For how long would RSS-BJP mislead public? Rahul on India slipping to 107th rank in Hunger Index

A day after the Union government rejected the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2022 that ranked the country 107 among 121 nations, several opposition leaders including former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi criticised the response.

“India stands at 107th spot among 121 countries when it comes to hunger and malnutrition. Now the Prime Minister and his ministers would say – ‘The hunger in India is not growing, rather other nations are not hungry’,” read a tweet in Hindi by Rahul Gandhi.

India ranked 107 among 121 countries in the GHI 2022, much behind its South Asian neighbours, with the child wasting rate at 19.3 per cent, the highest in the world. Saturday, the Union government rebuffed the hunger index report. “Misinformation seems to be the hallmark of the annually released Global Hunger Index,” the women and child development ministry stated.

The opposition leaders said the government must take responsibility for its “failure”.

“For how how long would the RSS-BJP mislead the public and weaken the nation?” Gandhi asked.

Without naming Nirmala Sitharaman, the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was referring to the Union minister’s comment in the United States that “the rupee was not sliding but the dollar was strengthening.”

“Achhe Din and Amrit Kaal for a select few . Double engine disaster for rest of India. Thanks Modi Ji for taking India to new lows,” read a tweet by Telangana minister KT Rama Rao.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan of “na khaunga, na khane dunga” (would not take bribes, nor let anyone do so), TMC MP Moitra tweeted, “Quite literally Modiji’s slogan has ensured India ranks 107/122 in Global Hunger Index.”

She said: ”India at 107/122 countries in 2022 global hunger index. Messrs Modi & Shah – all our neighbours who you so lovingly call termites & ‘ghoospetias’ are doing better than us ! Well done!”

Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said India has slipped in the hunger index yet again, now ranking 107, lagging behind every South Asian country except Afghanistan.

“BJP’s living in denial and trying to suppress facts has led India to this massive crisis,” he said on Twitter.

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi shared a report and asked: “The Global Hunger Index ranked India at 107/121. Modi govt called the index “misinformation”, and part of a “consistent effort’’ to “taint India’s image”. This report 👇is based on Modi govt’s own data, is this also a conspiracy to taint India’s image? (sic)”
