#BoycottCadbury trends in India for ad featuring vendor named “Damodar”

#BoycottCadbury is trending in India on Sunday morning after Hindu right-wing influencers got offended by a Diwali video advertisement featuring a shopless vendor called “Damodar”.

Hindu nationalist leader, Dr Prachi Sadhvi, tweeted that the ad was “done to show someone with PM Narendra Modi’s father’s name in poor light”.

“Chaiwale ka baap diyewala,” she wrote.

According to Get Day Trends, an analyst website, the hashtag #BoycottCadbury is the top trend in India with over 28.1K tweets. Many tweets have come from verified accounts belonging to journalists and other Hindutva figures.

Last year, Cadbury was in the spotlight for putting a beef element in Dairy Milk, one of the company’s most popular chocolate products, leading to a widespread backlash. A screenshot, resurfacing now, says the products are halal, which enrages Hindu nationalists.

Cadbury has clarified that all products manufactured and sold in India are vegetarian.
