Muslim journalist Siddique Kappan who was granted bail in UAPA case by Supreme Court of India last month, was denied bail today by Lucknow district court in a case registered against him by Enforcement Directorate.
The case was deferred four times before the hearing got over two weeks ago. District Judge Sanjay Shankar Pandey had concluded the hearing in the matter and reserved verdict on 12 October.
The jailed Kerala journalist will remain in Uttar Pradesh jail despite getting bail in Hathras conspiracy case under UAPA by the apex court on 9 September.
The ED had filed the case against Kappan and four others in February 2021 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Kappan had been arrested in October 2020 while on his way to Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras to report on the gangrape and death of a Dalit woman. He was booked under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and charged with sedition.
The UP government alleged he and other Muslim men were the part of a larger conspiracy to “foment religious discord and spread terror in the country”.
Kappan remained in jail for over 700 days before the Supreme Court granted him bail on September 9.
