The Allahabad High Court on 1 November, Tuesday, granted bail to a Muslim youth, Haseen, 26 months (802 days) after he was arrested by Kanpur police for his alleged role in the anti-CAA protests.
Justice Manish Mathur’s bench observed that the accused had not been named in the FIR and there was no evidence on record to indicate that he was a part of mob which particiapted in the protest, Live Law reported.
Haseen Alias Ishu was arrested on 22 August 2020 for allegedly participating in the protest which took place on 20 December 20, 2019 at Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. During the protests against discriminatory law, several Muslim men where shot dead by cops in Kanpur and other parts of BJP ruling UP.
Haseen was booked under Sections 147, 148, 149, 332, 353, 336, 307, 188, 427, 34, 109, 302, 120B I.P.C.; Section 3/4 Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984; Section 7 Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1944 and Section 27 Arms Act, 1959, the legal website reported.
Considering the fact that Haseen had not been named in the FIR and despite being in jail since 22 August 2020, the trial has not commenced against him, the Court granted him bail on his furnishing a personal bond and two sureties each in the like amount to the satisfaction of the court concerned, according to Live Law.

Human rights bodies across globe and United Nations vehemently criticised the UP government’s approach towards the Muslim protesters. At least 23 Muslims lost their lives in police firings during the protests.
