Remove 50% cap on reservations, says Nitish Kumar

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday demanded the 50% cap on reservations in the country should be removed.

Kumar’s comments came a day after the Supreme Court delivered a three-two verdict upholding the validity of the 10% reservation in educational institutions and jobs for the Economically Weaker Sections of the general quota. It was introduced by the NDA government in 2019.

““We were always in support of the quota (EWS). But it is high time that the limit of 50% be raised. The cap is depriving OBCs and EBCs of opportunities in proportion to their population,” JD(U) leader said while addressing reporters in Patna on Tuesday.

He also reiterated his demand for a fresh countrywide caste census.

“We are doing a caste census taking into account the economic status of a family, besides other considerations. That is why we have been asking for a nationwide caste census,” he added.
