The Kerala Story: FIR registered amidst outrage, Congress calls for ban

Kerala’s Director General of Police Anil Kant on Tuesday directed the Thiruvananthapuram police commissioner to register a case against the crew of the film “The Kerala Story” which makes unverifiable claims about extremism in the state.

Congress leader and leader of the opposition in Kerala Assembly VD Satheesan said the film spreads misinformation and should be banned.

The teaser of the movie released earlier this month claimed that over 32,000 women from Kerala were converted and taken to Islamic State-held areas in Syria and Afghanistan in a decade.

The film is directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by VA Shah. Sen also released a documentary in 2018 called ‘In The Name of Love — Melancholy of God’s Own Country’ which also presented the same number — 32,000.

The filmmakers are also accused of misleading the comments of the former Chief Minister of Kerala VS Achuthanandan.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu-based journalist BR Arvindakshan wrote to the chairperson of The Central Board of Film Certification seeking a ban on the movie unless the makers produce veracity of claims made in the film.

“Perhaps if this film is released, it will bring global discredit to all the intelligence agencies of India,” Aravindakshan tweeted.

The film was reportedly based on four missing women from north Kerala who were later traced to Afghanistan jails.

Two years ago, the external affairs ministry refused permission to take them back to the country.
