UP: Muslim man killed in ‘celebratory firing’ by BJP leader

A local leader of Bharatiya Janata Party was arrested in Kanpur on Saturday in connection with an apparent case of celebratory firing that led to the death of a bouncer at the wedding function of the leader’s brother on Friday, PTI reported.

UP Police identified the accused as Ramji Gupta and the deceased as Sadiq Qureshi (32), who hailed from Kanpur.

Ramji Gupta was treasurer of the BJYM’s Kanpur unit.

Sadiq was taken to hospital where doctors declared him dead, police said.

According to PTI news agency, the incident was reported from ‘Royal Garden’ in Kanpur city during Gupta’s brother Rajat Gupta’s wedding function.

A case was registered at the local police station under IPC sections 304 (Punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder), and 504 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace). A complaint was filed by Sadiq’s brother, Sajid Qureshi.

“On Friday, information was received at the Rail Bazaar police station that a person was shot at and was taken to hospital by his colleagues and family members. It was found that Ramji Gupta booked the Royal Garden for the wedding function and had brought some bouncers there . In apparent celebratory firing, a bouncer was shot at. Ramji Gupta has been arrested,” said Kanpur ADCP (East) Manish Chandra Sonkar.
