Sharjeel Imam moves Supreme Court against HC order calling him ‘main conspirator’

Jailed Muslim student leader Sharjeel Imam has moved the Supreme Court seeking expunction of observations and remarks made about him by the Delhi High Court while denying bail to jailed activist Umar Khalid in the Delhi pogrom conspiracy case.

The high court said that Khalid was constantly in touch with Imam, who was arguably “at the head of the conspiracy.”

Imam filed a Special Leave Petition before the Supreme Court, challenging the October 18 HC order seeking ad-interim ex-parte stay of the order.

The remarks were made in complete defiance of the law laid down by the Supreme Court, Imam said. Imam said he is aggrieved by such remarks as it vitiates his right to a fair trial.

The Muslim student leader also argued that at no point was his bail application heard along with that of Umar Khalid and sought direction that his appeal pending before the High Court be heard uninfluenced by the impugned observations.
