Morocco creates history, topples Portugal to win spot in WC semifinals

Morocco became the first African nation to enter the semifinals of the World Cup toppling heavyweight Portugal in a spectacular quarter-final on Saturday night. The North African- Arab nation is unbeaten so far in the tournament.

Nesyri’s magnificent header in the first half marked the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo’s European side.

Morocco also defeated Belgium and Spain in their unbelievable journey to the semi-finals. They finished in a draw against Croatia in the first group-stage match.

The electrifying fans of Morocco turned into a frenzy when the final whistle was blown in Al Thumama Stadium.

Ronaldo, who came on the pitch in the second half, couldn’t beat Morocco’s star goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Portugal had 73% of ball possession while Morocco too missed brilliant attempts.

Several key players of the African side left the pitch due to injuries.

The Atlas Lions will face either France or England in the semi-finals on 14 December.
