545 days in jail; no bail for Mohammad Umar Gautam

The Allahabad High Court Friday denied bail to prominent Muslim scholar Mohammad Umar Gautam who was arrested last year under draconian charges on the allegations of running a mass conversion racket in Uttar Pradesh.

The HC also denied bail to four other co-accused.

“evidence) reflects that he was carrying on anti-national activities with the help of anti-social elements for achieving a nefarious design that would weaken the social fabric of the country and developed and spread hatredness amongst the people of different religions which would disturb the public order. He has also received huge sum of money in his personal accounts from different sources including foreign countries,” Live Law quoted the bench of Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Saroj Yadav as observing.

Umar Gautam had moved the High Court after his bail plea was rejected by the Special Judge, NIA/ATS/Additional District & Sessions Judge, Lucknow in May this year.

Umar Gautam was arrested on 20 June last year by Uttar Pradesh Anti Terrorism Squad. ATS also arrested Gautam’s son Abdullah Umar in connection with the same case.

Taqdees Fatimah, daughter of jailed Muslim scholar Umar Gautam had said to Maktoob that her father and brother are behind bars because they exercised their constitutional rights.
