Sheikh Sabir Ali who was arrested by West Bengal Police six months ago in a drug case and have been languishing in Dum Dum Central Jail, breathed his last on Monday night at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Sabir’s family accused jail personnel of torturing him inside the jail.
The family members said that Sabir’s wife was informed her partner’s death by phone call on Tuesday morning.
Sabir who is a resident of Kazipara in North 24 Parganas District was arrested by cops at Barasat Police Station.
Sabir’s wife and family members have been claiming that the case against him based on false allegations.
“My son protested against the drug trade. Because of that, Sabir became an eyesore of the police. If he was alive, the police could not get money from the liquor and ganja trade. Therefore, the police cleared the road by framing my son in a false case,” Sheikh Jobed Ali, Sabir’s father said.
Asma Khatun, the wife of the deceased, said: “Due to the lack of evidence, the police were forced to release my husband. This time, everything was overshadowed. My husband was arrested in a false case and killed in jail.”
Following the death of Sabir, his family members and locals staged a protest blocking the road in the area, demanding justice to Sabir.
