“Told children to settle abroad, atmosphere not good here”: RJD leader Abdul Bari Siddiqui

Speaking at an event in Bihar last week, senior Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Abdul Bari Siddiqui highlighted what he believed was a bias against the Muslim community in India.

“I have a son who attends Harvard University and a daughter who has passed out from the London School of Economics,” Siddiqui said. “I told my son and daughter to work there (abroad) only, to get citizenship if they can,” he added.

A former state minister, Siddiqui says, “When my children reacted with disbelief, pointing out that I was still living here (in India), I told them they will not be able to cope.”

He adds, “You all can understand how painful it is when a father says such things to his children”.

He was reportedly speaking at an event held at the State Council Hall in honour of newly elected chairman of the State Upper House Devesh Chandra Thakur on December 17.

Meanwhile, the BJP’s Bihar unit lashed out at Siddiqui, saying his remarks are anti-India.

“Siddiqui’s remarks are anti-India. If he is feeling so stifled, he should give up the privileges he enjoys here as a political leader and move to Pakistan. Nobody will stop him”, state BJP spokesman Nikhil Anand told PTI news agency.

“Siddiqui is a close aide of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad and his utterances are reflective of his party’s culture of Muslim appeasement”, added the BJP leader.

Siddiqui who was Leader of Opposition in 2010, was also State president of RJD in 2007.
