Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O’Brien alleged Saturday that his tweet on the recent BBC documentary India: The Modi Question has been deleted by Twitter.
“@Twitter @TwitterIndia HAS TAKEN DOWN MY TWEET of the #BBCDocumentary, it received lakhs of views. The 1 hr @BBC docu exposes how PM @narendramodi HATES MINORITIES,” read a tweet by O’Brien.
The MP shared an e-mail addressed to him from the microblogging site, which said his tweet was deleted at the request of the Indian government that claimed it violated the country’s laws.
He further said: “See flimsy reason given. The opposition will continue to fight the good fight (sic).”
“In the interest of transparency, we are writing to inform you that Twitter has received a request from Indian Government regarding your Twitter account, @derekobrienmp, that claims the following content violates the laws of India. In order to comply with Twitter’s obligations under India’s local laws, we have withheld this content in India; the content remains available elsewhere,” read the e-mail to O’Brien.
The BBC documentary released on Tuesday claimed that a team sent by the British government to inquire into the 2002 Gujarat genocide said that Narendra Modi was “directly responsible for a climate of impunity” that led to the anti-Muslim violence. The documentary, titled The Modi Question, was removed from YouTube on Wednesday.
Terming the BBC documentary a “propaganda piece” meant to push a “discredited narrative”, foreign ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said a “bias,” “lack of objectivity,” and “continuing colonial mindset” is “blatantly visible” in it, Reuters reported.
“It makes us wonder about the purpose of this exercise and the agenda behind it, and we do not wish to dignify such efforts,” he told a news conference.
