Muslim man lynched by cow vigilantes in Assam, mob protests for release of accused

A Muslim man Naju Ali was lynched to death in Assam’s Sivasagar district by cow vigilantes on 5 February. 14 members of the Hindutva group have been arrested so far.

“The incident took place in Bamunpukhuri tea garden area on Sunday night (5 February). A group of people had beaten a man identified as Naju Ali on the suspicion of stealing cow there. After that he was taken to a local hospital and later shifted to the Jayasagar civil hospital,” Superintendent of Police of Sivasagar, Shuvrajyoti Borah said to reporters.

However, Ali succumbed to his injuries.

Ali’s uncle said that he was on his way to family member’s house.

Meanwhile, local Hindus protested against the arrest of the 14 assailants, saying that they were “innocent,” IANS reported.

Over a hundred of Muslims were killed in more than two hundred cases of cow-related violence reported across India between 2012 and 2022.
