Hyderabad: BJP candidate booked after asking burqa-clad women to lift veil to check identity

Bharatiya Janata Party’s Hyderabad candidate Madhavi Latha was booked on Monday for asking burqa-clad women to lift the veil to check their identity at a polling booth. A case is registered in Malakpet Police Station against Latha under sections 171C, 186, 505(1)(c) of IPC and Section 132 of the Representation of the People Act.

The video shared by ANI showed the controversial candidate inspecting the identity cards of voters in the burqa and asking them to show their faces. The video drew flak on social media, prompting the returning officer to respond.

Latha is contesting against AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, seeking a fifth term as the Member of Parliament from Hyderabad. Congress has fielded Mohammed Waliullah Sameer.

After the video was widely circulated, many questioned Arvind’s misconduct and unwanted involvement while there were already female polling agents to take care of the matter.

Latha also warned polling officials to allow voting only after properly checking ID cards. She later claimed that there were discrepancies in the voter list and that the names of several voters were missing.

Voting was underway in all 17 Lok Sabha constituencies of Telangana on Monday. After the viral video, Latha said, “As per law, the candidate has the right to check the ID cards without the facemasks.”

“I am not a man, I am a woman and with a lot of humbleness, I have only requested them – can I please see and verify with the ID cards,” Latha was quoted as saying. “If somebody wants to make a big issue out of it, that means they are scared,” she told reporters.

Meanwhile, another BJP MP candidate Dharmapuri Arvind went to a polling centre in Nizamabad and heckled Muslim women voters who came to vote wearing Niqab. Arvind shouted at the staff present there and asked if the Muslim women who came to vote were allowed to vote without comparing their faces and ID cards.

In April, the Hyderabad Police had booked Latha following a complaint alleging that she had hurt the sentiments of the Muslim community by miming at shooting an arrow at a mosque during a procession.
