NDA candidate Prajwal Revanna, father booked in sexual harassment case

Janata Dal (S) leader and former Minister HD Revanna and his son and Member of Parliament Prajwal Revanna were booked for sexual harassment and criminal intimidation by the Holenarsipur Town Police on Sunday. HD Revanna is former prime minister HD Deve Gowda’s son, and Prajwal is Deve Gowda’s grandson.

Prajwal Revanna is also the Lok Sabha candidate from Hassan fielded by JDS under the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance.

This comes after the Karnataka government announced that a special investigation team will probe the case of “obscene videos” allegedly involving the Hassan MP. More than 2,000 pen drives carrying videos of alleged sexual assault against several women, allegedly recorded by Prajwal Revanna himself, circulated in Hassan ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in the constituency on Friday.

Prajwal is said to have left the country for Germany.

A 47-year-old woman filed a complaint against the father and son accusing them of sexually harassing her and her daughter. The complaint comes days after accusations emerged that Prajwal Revanna has sexually assaulted numerous women and videographed them.

According to the FIR, the woman worked in Revanna’s house as a domestic worker for about three-and-a-half years from 2015 and alleged that the harassment occurred between January 2019 and January 22, The News Minute reported.

FIR is filed under sections 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking), 506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (outraging the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to reports, the BJP leader from Hassan, Devaraj Gowda, alerted BJP leadership about Prajwal Revanna’s videos in Dec 2023. Congress alleges that the BJP shielded the accused despite knowledge about the videos and scandal.

Responding to the allegations, Revanna’s brother and former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy distanced the party from the matter.

“Deve Gowda and I have never disrespected any woman. The state government has ordered a SIT investigation, so let the report come out. We will not shield anyone. Let the truth come out,” he said.

The opposition parties have rallied to attack BJP and Modi for covering up the allegations despite local leaders flagging it. Modi has campaigned for Prajwal Revanna.

Voting for 14 of the 28 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka is scheduled for May 7.
