Rahul Gandhi to contest from Raebareli, Congress loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma from Amethi

After weeks of deliberations and talks, the Congress on Friday named Rahul Gandhi as its candidate from the traditional Gandhi family seat of Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. Gandhi is scheduled to file their nomination papers today, the last date for the filing of nominations

Congress loyalist Kishori Lal Sharma will contest from Amethi, the party’s bastions in Uttar Pradesh.

The Congress announced the candidature on the last date for filing nomination papers for both seats. Both constituencies will vote on May 20.

Rahul, who lost the election from Amethi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, has been given the responsibility to contest Raebareli – his mother’s seat. Rahul Gandhi has already contested from Kerala’s Wayanad, where polling happened on April 26.

In 2019, Sonia won the seat by 1.67 lakh votes defeating BJP’s Dinesh Singh. Even this time, BJP has fielded Singh, an MLC and minister in the UP government.

Sonia, who won Raebareli in 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019, is not contesting this time and has moved to the Rajya Sabha.

Kishori Lal Sharma is a Gandhi family loyalist who has worked in different party organisations, including the Youth Congress. He will face-off Union minister Smriti Irani, who had defeated Rahul in 2019 by 55,120 votes.
