West Bengal: Section 144 imposed in 17 areas of Sandeshkhali after polling day violence 

The West Bengal government has imposed prohibitory orders in 17 areas of Sandeshkhali, after the region witnessed widespread violence on the polling day (Saturday).

Basirhat Superintendent of Police Hossain Mehendi Rahman on Sunday announced the imposition of section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in areas from Sarberia to Bayermari under the Nazat police station limits, till the evening on June 4, when the votes will be counted.

The areas include Rajbari, Hatgacho and Kanmari.

Several incidents of violence and arson were reported in Bermajur, Bayarmari, Agarhati, Kanmari and other areas in Sandeshkhali, which falls under the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency.

In an episode, the Agarhati villagers of Sandeshkhali clashed with the Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel.

They blocked roads with tree trunks when police personnel reached there in search of a few persons accused of the attack, PTI reported.

There were also clashes between party members of BJP AND TMC.

A police sub-inspector named Sagir Zaman was injured during the violence, and is under treatment.

Chanchal Khatua, a BJP worker got a stitch on his head after he was injured in police lathicharge.

The Election Commission and the state Governor C V Anand Bose have sought an action-taken report from the state government on the incidents that took place in Sandeshkhali.

Both BJP and TMC leaders filed complaints against each other.
