The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) has said nearly 800 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since May while trying to get food.

Most of them were killed at sites run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a group backed by the US and Israel.

Today alone, 10 people were killed at a GHF site in Rafah in southern Gaza.

UNHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani expressed grave concern over potential atrocity crimes, highlighting what she described as the impossible choice people face between starvation and being shot.

“Up until 7 July, we have recorded 798 killings of those trying to access aid. People must be able to access essential supplies such as food and medicine in a safe and dignified manner,” she said.

UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini said Israel has turned Gaza into a “graveyard of children and starving people.”

“Inaction and silence are complicities. Under our watch, Gaza has become the graveyard of children and starving people. No way out. Their choice is between 2 deaths: starvation or being shoot at. The most cruel and machiavellian scheme to kill, in total impunity. Our norms and values are being buried. Inaction will bring more chaos. Time to act is overdue,” read Lazzarini’s X post.

He added: “During the ceasefire, the UN provided at scale and dignified assistance. The trend of deepening starvation was reversed. Today, there are — at best — four very far distribution points in comparison to 400 when the UN was in charge.”

“500-600 trucks of supplies went into Gaza with food, fuel, medicines and hygiene kits during the ceasefire. Now, very little dry food is sent as malnutrition among children spreads.”

He further said: “Lifesaving supplies are expiring on at least 6,000 UNRWA trucks packed with food, medicines and other basics waiting for the green light to enter Gaza for the past 4 months.”

Lazzarini also stressed that allegations of aid being diverted to Hamas were never raised in official meetings, never proven, and never substantiated.
