15 killed in landslides in Mizoram; more workers feared dead

At least 15 people have been killed in multiple landslides across Aizawl in Mizoram on Tuesday, including 11 in a stone quarry collapse, with the northeastern state witnessing storms caused by Cyclone Remal.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma held an emergency meeting with Home Minister K Sapdanga’n Zokhawthar, the DC and other officials of the state after Cyclone Remal led to a major quarry collapse and a massive landslide in the state, India Today NE reported.

CM Lalduhoma said that the number of confirmed deaths as of 11.15 am was 15, according to Indian Express. Of these, 11 bodies were recovered from the site of a landslide in a stone quarry between Aizawl district’s Melthum and Hlimen. More bodies continue to be trapped in the debris, the CM added.

Search operation is underway to retrieve people and bodies trapped under the rubble.

“We have sanctioned an amount of Rs 15 crore for relief work, and today itself, we will extend assistance to the relatives of the deceased. The storm is subsiding now but the signal is very poor in many parts of the state, which is why it has been difficult to gather information and respond,” he said to the newspaper.

The state government has also approved Rs 4 lakh as ex-gratia payment for the families of the deceased.
