3 women, 1 boy among 7 charred to death as fire breaks out in Delhi’s Gokulpuri

Seven people, including a 13-year-old boy and three women died and around 60 shanties were gutted after a fire broke out in Northeast Delhi’s Gokulpuri area.

The tragic incident happened on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. The fire fighting department received a call at around 1 am on Saturday and were told about the incident.

“Our teams immediately reached the spot with all rescue equipment. We also contacted the fire department and they sent 13 fire tenders,” Additional DCP Devesh Mahla said.

“We recovered seven charred bodies, including that of three women,” an official from fire department said.

“The charred bodies are unrecognisable. It seemed that these people were sleeping and could not escape as the fire spread extremely fast. Also, 60 huts were completely burnt. We are yet to know the reasons behind the fire,” Delhi fire director Atul Garg was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

The fire might have been caused by a short circuit although the exact cause hasn’t been ascertained yet, initial investigations showed.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal offered condolences and said that he will meet the victims of the fire incident.

“Heard the sad news early in the morning. I will go to the spot and meet the affected people personally,” Kejriwal wrote in a tweet in Hindi.
