7 years after Govind Pansare’s murder, Bombay HC transfers probe from SIT to ATS

Over seven years after the killing of activist and CPI leader Govind Pansare, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday transferred the probe into the case to the Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).

Over seven years after the killing of activist and CPI leader Govind Pansare, the Bombay High Court on Wednesday transferred the probe into the case to the Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Maharashtra Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was investigating the case till now.

The court was allowing the application filed by Pansare’s family members and transferring the probe to the ATS.

“We are only deciding the petition for transfer of investigation today,” Justice Dere said when some of the accused tried to intervene during the hearing, according to Live Law.

Pansare was shot at on February 16, 2015 in Kolhapur and succumbed to his injuries a few days later on February 20.

The CID was probing the case and had arrested a few people.

Advocate Abhay Nevagi, appearing for Pansare’s family told the court that the masterminds behind the killing and the shooters are still unidentified and at large, PTI news agency reported.

“According to the SIT, there are around 40 more persons in the hitlist of the people behind Pansare’s killing. This includes his family members, the family of slain rationalist Narendra Dabholkar and Medha Patkar. We only want the masterminds to be nabbed,” Nevagi told the HC.

Pansare’s family said the court was informed earlier about a common link to the communist leader and Dabholkar’s killings in Maharashtra and the murders of M M Kalburgi and Gauri Lankesh in Karnataka but the investigators were unable to find the mastermind.

Senior advocate Ashok Mundargi, who represented CID, said the state government has no objection to transferring the case to ATS.
