9 pilgrims killed as bus falls into a gorge in J&K, militant attack suspected

At least nine persons were killed and 33 were injured in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district on Sunday as a bus fell into a gorge after being attacked by suspected militants.

The bus was traveling from Shiv Khori, a shrine dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva, to the town of Katra.

Mohita Sharma, the senior superintendent of police, said to ANI news agency that the militants fired at the bus, due to which the driver lost control of the vehicle and it fell into a gorge. Sharma said that the rescue operation had been completed, and those injured were admitted to nearby hospitals.

A search operation was launched to find the suspected militants behind the attack, as senior police officials and other security personnel rushed to the spot and the area was being cordoned off.

“Deeply pained by the incident of the attack on pilgrims in Reasi, J&K. Spoke to the Lieutenant Governor and the DGP, J&K, and inquired about the incident. The culprits of this dastardly attack will not be spared and will face the wrath of the law. The local administration is working on a war footing to provide immediate medical attention. May the Almighty give the loved ones of the deceased the strength to bear this pain. I also pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” said Union Minister Amit Shah.

“Shocking news coming from Reasi where nine people were killed in a bus accident reportedly caused by militants firing at the vehicle. My deepest condolences to the families & their loved ones,” said Mehbooba Mufti, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister.
