After 29 months in jail, Bombay HC grants bail to Varavara Rao for 6 months in Bhima Koregaon case

The Bombay High Court on Monday granted bail to 82-year-old revolutionary poet and human rights defender Varavara Rao in Bhima Koregaon case on medical grounds.

According to legal website Bar and Bench, the Court has granted the octogenarian bail Rao for a period of six months.

“We feel that with the condition of the under trial, it would be inappropriate to send him back (to jail). It would be appropriate to impose such conditions,” pronouncing its verdict today, the Bench held.

Rao has been granted bail on the condition that he has to stay within the jurisdiction of the Special NIA Court.

The poet is presently lodged in Nanavati Hospital after Chief Public Prosecutor Deepak Thakare informed the Court that the State Home Minister was willing to shift Rao to a private hospital as a special case.

Revolutionary poet 82-year-old Rao has been in jail for over 29 months in the Bhima Koregaon case under draconian UAPA charges. Earlier, his bail pleas, including those filed for relief on the ground of his age, ill-health, and risk of Covid-19, have been rejected on multiple occasions.
