Ahmedabad blasts: 28 of 77 Muslim men acquitted, 49 convicted after 13 years of trial

A special court in Ahmedabad on Tuesday convicted 49 accused and acquitted 29 accused in the case of Ahmedabad serial blasts in 2008 in which 56 people were killed and over 200 suffered injuries.

The verdict comes after the protracted trial that lasted almost 13 years. The trial in the case ended in September last year. 

Judge A R Patel acquitted Naved, Raziuddin, Umar, Salim, Zakir, Mubin, Mansoor, Saqib, E T Sainuddi, Anwar Bagban, Yasin, Irfan, Nasir, Asdullah, Shakil, Nadim, Shami, Dr. Ahmed Beg, Kamran, Zahir, Yunus, Hasib Raza, Habib, M Shahid, A Sattar, Afaq Iqbal, Manzar and Suhaib on Tuesday.

The hearing to decide the quantum of sentence for the convicted persons will start from Wednesday, the court said.

During the trial, the police said people associated with the banned outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM), were allegedly involved in carrying out the serial blasts.

Earlier at least 35 FIRs were filed in Ahmedabad, where the blasts took place, and in Surat, where the police had recovered bombs from different locations after the blasts in Ahmedabad. The trial began after as many as 35 cases were merged and consolidated into one case.

The accused were slapped with charges under the draconian UAPA and charges of murder, attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy.
