
A London-bound Air India flight carrying 242 passengers and crew members crashed in Ahmedabad’s Meghani area near the city’s airport Thursday afternoon.
In videos shared online, smoke was seen rising from the ground.
The flight, which departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 hrs, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals.
Following the crash, Air India, via a statement, said: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details and will share further updates at the earliest.”
The aircraft, a Boeing Dreamliner, took off around 1:47 p.m., slightly delayed from schedule. Officials say it crashed nine minutes after being given clearance for take-off.
Three National Disaster Response Force teams, comprising 95 personnel, have been moved from Gandhinagar to the plane crash site. A total of three more teams are being moved from Vadodara.
Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was reported to be onboard the plane.
