Amarinder Singh resigns as CM, says “I feel humiliated, feel they doubt my work”

Hours, after he was asked to step down as the Chief Minister of Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday, resigned from the post.

Amarinder Singh, the veteran Congress leader met the Governor at Raj Bhavan and handed him his resignation letter, Amarinder’s son Ravinder Singh tweeted.

“…must go now as I am proud to accompany my father to Raj Bhawan when he submits his resignation as CM of Punjab and leads us as head of our family into a new beginning et all,” reads tweet.

Soon after tendering his resignation from the post of Punjab CM, Amarinder Singh said: “I have resigned. I had spoken to the Congress president in the morning. I had told her I am resigning.”

He went on to say: “This has happened for the third time. They called MLAs twice in Delhi. And now, this third meeting. I feel humiliated, feel they doubt my work. I told the Congress President that I will resign. And they can appoint anyone they have confidence in.”

“I have been in politics for 52 years. I will talk to my supporters and then I will decide on my future in politics. Future politics is always there, It is an option, I will use that option when the time comes,” he adds.

“This kind of humiliation is enough, this is happening for the third time. I can’t continue to stay in the party with this kind of humiliation,” Singh, has reportedly told Congress president Sonia Gandhi earlier this day.

A Congress Legislature Party meeting will be held at the party headquarters in Chandigarh today. The AICC general secretary in-charge of Punjab, Harish Rawat, called for the meeting at 5 pm today in a tweet at 11.39 pm Friday.

Reports say over 50 MLAs had written to Sonia Gandhi demanding that Amarinder Singh be replaced as Chief Minister, forcing the party to announce late last night an emergency meeting of MLAs.

The names of three leaders are in circulation to replace him – former Punjab Congress chiefs Sunil Jakhar and Pratap Singh Bajwa, and Beant Singh’s grandson Ravneet Singh Bittu, according to NDTV.

The Punjab Congress crisis has escalated dramatically over the CM’s festering feud with Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu. In July, despite the Chief Minister’s fierce resistance, the party-appointed Navjot Sidhu its Punjab chief, but the acrimony stayed barely below the surface.
