Amid India-Pak fight, Reliance, others seek trademark for ‘Operation Sindoor’; “insensitivity,” says social media

Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Industries filed an application with the Trademarks Registry on Wednesday, May 7, seeking to register ‘Operation Sindoor,’ the name of a recent Indian operation targeting what it describes as ‘terrorist infrastructure’ in Pakistan and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, as a wordmark.

The term has been proposed for registration under Class 41, which pertains to education and entertainment services.

The application specifies a broad range of services, including the provision of entertainment; production, presentation, and distribution of audio, video, still and moving images, and data; publishing services, including electronic publishing; provision of discussion forums; non-downloadable electronic publications; as well as the organisation and presentation of shows, competitions, games, concerts, exhibitions, and events. It also includes language teaching and advisory services related to these offerings.

Four other applicants—Mukesh Chetram Agrawal, Group Captain Kamal Singh Oberh (Retd), Alok Kothari, and Jayaraj T (who applied for Operation Sindoor – Sindoora Yuddham)—have also submitted applications to register the same term.

Meanwhile, many pointed to the timing of the move, as border districts in India face cross-border fighting and several civilians, including children, have lost their lives in shelling from Pakistan.
