Soon after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement that people of different states should communicate with each other in Hindi and not English, Music legend A R Rahman Friday posted about “Beloved Tamil” on social media.

This comes amid strong and sharp reactions from Tamil political parties to Shah’s statement.

Oscar-winning musician Rahman shared an illustration of “Thamizhanangu” of “Goddess Tamil,” a word from Tamil Thai Vaazhthu or the Tamil national anthem.

He also wrote: “Beloved Tamil is the root of our existence.” The line was from “Thamiliyakkam,” a book of Tamil poems by modern Tamil poet of the 20th century Bharathidasan.

Rahman shared the post on his Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram accounts.

Amit Shah had remarked that people from different states should speak in Hindi with each other and that Hindi should be accepted as an alternative to English.

“Now the time has come to make the official language an important part of the unity of the country. When citizens of states who speak other languages communicate with each other, it should be in the language of India,” Shah was quoted by the Ministry of Home Affairs as having said.

The statement has sparked outrage in several states of the country, including Tamil Nadu.

In Tamil Nadu, DMK MP Kanimozhi and S Ramadoss, founder of the NDA ally Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), were among those who opposed the BJP leader’s remark.

DMK’s Kanimozhi, Lok Sabha MP from Thoothukudi, said, “Bringing the idea of one language will not help unite the nation but to split it. The Union government and ministers should be aware of the history of anti-Hindi agitations and the sacrifices made for that.”
