AMU student found dead at hostel, suicide suspected

A student was found dead in the morning at Mumtaz Hostel in Aligarh Muslim University’s Aftab Hall, with witnesses suspecting it to be a case of suicide.

The student has been identified as Mohammad Shakir, son of Mohammad Zahid, a resident of Lakhimpur Kheri, who was pursuing his master’s in Sunni theology.

It was the laborers who had come for road work at the hostel who spotted the body hanging from a rope around 9:20 AM and informed the administration, after which the police and the AMU proctorial team arrived at the scene.

“After a preliminary investigation, it appears to be a case of suicide. However, the body has been sent for post-mortem, and the real cause of death will only be revealed after the examination,” said Abhay Kumar Pandey, SHO of Civil Lines police station.

Wasim Ali, the proctor of the university, expressed grief over the tragic death.

“After receiving information that the student’s body was found hanging, I reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem. The entire matter is being investigated. The family members of the student have been informed. Action will be taken after the investigation,” he stated while giving information on the matter.

“Mohammad Shakir was known as a quiet and studious student among his fellow students and friends. If it is a case of suicide, the reason behind it remains unclear,” said Salman Gauri, a resident of the hall.

The post-mortem will be conducted after the arrival of the family.
