Tripura police has booked 68 Twitter profiles under draconian UAPA for their tweets on the recent anti-Muslim violence unleashed by Hindutva groups in the northeast state.
The accounts were used to post “distorted or objectionable” contents regarding the alleged Mosque vandalism in the state, NDTV quotes Tripura police as saying.
Reports say the police has asked Twitter to suspend these 68 profiles on the platform. The letter to Twitter mentioned the links of all the 68 profiles.
The West Tripura district police had sent the letter to the Twitter’s grievance officer at his official address in California in the United States on 3 November, according to NDTV.
“That some persons / organization are publishing / posting distorted and objectionable news items / statements in Twitter regarding the recent clash and alleged attack upon mosques of Muslim communities in the state,” read the letter.
According to the police in BJP ruling state, the some of the news items or posts on these 68 Twitter profiles contain photographs or videos of some other incidents, fabricated statements or commentary for promoting enmity between religious groups and communities in presence of a criminal conspiracy.
“The posts have potential to flare up communal tension in Tripura State between people different religious Communities, which may result into communal riots,” the letter accessed by NDTV states.
The letter has also sought details of a list of IP addresses where the users logged into accounts, and also mobile numbers added to the social media accounts.
Two days ago, Tripura Police have registered a case under the draconian UAPA against advocate Mukesh of PUCL and advocate Ansar Indori of NCHRO who were members of a fact-finding team to Tripura, to uncover the “targeted attacks on Muslims” in Tripura.
Both the lawyers have been asked to appear before the West Agartala police station by 10 November. The UAPA notices to lawyers, demanded the lawyers to “immediately delete these fabricated and false statements/comments made/circulated by you in the social media.”
The Tripura’s BJP government and state police have been claiming that there was no law and order problem in the state and no mosques were burnt by Hindutva groups despite media including Maktoob reported several anti-Muslim crimes across the northeast state.
Maktoob reported more than two dozen hate crimes against Muslims including mosque vandalisation, attacks against Muslim houses, shops, and hawkers, molesting Muslim women, and anti-Muslim and genocidal slogans during the rallies.
