Apex Sikh body terms Ram Rahim Singh’s acquittal “unfortunate,” offers support to Ranjit Singh’s family in legal fight

Apex Sikh body, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has termed the acquittal of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the murder case of Dera manager Ranjit Singh as unfortunate.

SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami said that Gurmeet Ram Rahim “with an immoral character and accused of hurting the religious sentiments of Sikhs should not receive any kind of relief.”

The Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitted Ram Rahim Singh on 28 May for the murder of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh in 2002. However, he will remain imprisoned in a jail in Rohtak, Haryana, as a result of convictions in two other criminal cases. In August 2017, he was convicted of two counts of rape and in January 2019, he was convicted for the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati.

Dhami stated that the Haryana government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, has already favored Gurmeet Ram Rahim, the main accused in the 2015 case of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib, ignoring the norms, and now this verdict in the Ranjit Singh murder case is also unsatisfactory.

However, the SGPC said that they respect the courts.

Dhami mentioned that Ram Rahim is serving a sentence for many heinous crimes and it is the duty of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure a solid follow-up in the Ranjit Singh murder case so that public confidence in its investigation system is not lost.

He also said that the SGPC, being a representative body of Sikhs, is ready to provide possible support to the family of Ranjit Singh in this murder case against Gurmeet Ram Rahim.
