In the last 24 hours, Assam floods took the lives of seven more people, including two children. More than 54 lack people have been affected due to the floods and landslides in the northeastern state.
The death toll has now reached 107, officials said.
The Brahmaputra and Barak rivers, as well as their tributaries, are in spate in the majority of the affected districts, and large areas of land are still under water.
NDRF, SDRF, and other organisations rescued 3658 people throughout the state during the day using 276 boats.
In Assam’s 12 flood-affected districts, the NDRF has rescued around 14,500 marooned persons, an official said.
According to its assistant commandant Santosh Kumar Singh, the 1st Battalion Disaster Response Force of the NDRF sprang into rescue operations in the affected districts and deployed more than 70 boats and 400 troops in the severely flooded districts. An additional eight teams from other battalions with 207 personnel were airlifted to Silchar since Tuesday, he said.
In 759 relief camps established by the respective district administrations throughout the 30 affected districts, 2.84 lakh people are currently finding shelter. In the districts of Dhubri, Sivasagar, and Nagaon, the Brahmaputra, Disang, and Kopili are flowing above the danger level mark.
Meanwhile, Integrated Child Development services said they are making children participate in pre-school activities in relief camps, reported news agency ANI.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the Union government is continuously monitoring the flood situation in Assam and is working closely with the state government to provide all assistance to overcome the challenge.
“Army and NDRF teams are present in the flood-affected areas. They are conducting evacuation operations and assisting those who are affected. The Air Force has conducted over 250 sorties as a part of the evacuation process,” he said.
Expressing his concern over the devastation caused by the catastrophe, PM Modi on Thursday tweeted, “Over the last few days, parts of Assam have witnessed flooding due to heavy rainfall. The Central Government is continuously monitoring the situation in Assam and is working closely with the State Government to provide all possible assistance to overcome this challenge.”
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has expedited the rescue efforts in response to the present flood situation in Assam by engaging the services of stakeholders and deploying more resources and support systems in the most severely affected districts, especially Cachar.
In addition, personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been brought to the Cachar district to undertake rescue efforts.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, visited the severely impacted Cachar area on Thursday to assess the flood situation.
The chief minister made an aerial survey of the district. Later on, CM Sarma chaired a meeting with senior officials, NDRF, and SDRF to take stock of the relief and rescue operations.
In addition, 173 roads and 20 bridges were damaged by the flood, and three embankments were damaged in the Baksa and Darrang districts, respectively. This second wave of flood has harmed a crop area of 100869.7 hectares and 33,77,518 animals, while 84 animals were washed away during the day.
