Assam: Muslim delegation meets CM seeking judicial probe into police killings, land to evicted

A delegation of Muslim organisations, led by leaders of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (JUH) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JIH), met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday in connection with the incidents of forced evictions and police killings of two Bengali Muslims in Darrang.

The delegation included JIH national vice president S Ameenul Hasan and secretary Shafi Madni, JUH general secretary Maulana Hakimuddin Qasmi, Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) national president Salman Ahmad, and All India United Democratic Front MLAs Hafiz Rafiqul Islam Qasmi, Aminul Islam, and Mujibur Rahman.

The delegation demanded a high-level judicial inquiry into police violence. The Muslim leaders also urged CM to immediately provide INR 20 lakh compensation for the family members of 32-year-old Moinul Hoque and Sheikh Farid, a 12-year-old and a class 7 student who were killed in police firing and INR 10 lakh for injured in the police firing.

“Immediate steps be taken for relief and rehabilitation of evacuated with minimum six bighas of land for agriculture and one bigha of land for residence,” Muslim leaders said to CM.

Qasmi said that what happened in Darrang district was very distressing. Human rights have paramount importance in the Constitution of India.

“No piece of land is more important than human life, so we hope that the CM of Assam will protect human values and work diligently to bring justice to the oppressed,” Qasmi adds.

Earlier on Sunday, the same joint delegation met district officials and senior police officials in the area.

SIO to sponsor education of Moinul Haque’s children

On Monday, an SIO delegation led by Salman Ahmad, national president of the students’ body, met with the families of Moinul Haque and Shaikh Farid, who were killed by Assam police, offering them condolence and solidarity.

The organisation also announced that it will sponsor the entire education of Moinul Haque’s three children.

“It will be an honour for us to bear the expenses of the education of all three of the children. We want them to study in their area of interest as much as they want. We requested their family to let us sponsor their education, which was accepted by them. We pray for a better life and prosperity for them and punishment for those who made them suffer,” said Salman Ahmad.

32-year-old Haque was the sole breadwinner of his family. He is survived by his parents, wife and three children – two sons Muqassidul and Muqaddas Ali and daughter Manzoora Begum.
