The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee on Friday protested in front of the police station in Assam where Gujarat MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani has been held in a case registered against him over a tweet criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mevani was arrested by the Assam police from Gujarat’s Banaskantha district following a complaint by a BJP leader from Assam that Mevani had allegedly tweeted that Modi “considered Godse as God.”

His bail plea was rejected and he was remanded in three days’ police custody by a court in Kokrajhar. Mevani will be produced in the court on Sunday after his remand period expires.

Several senior APCC leaders including General Secretary Apurva Bhattacharjee participated in the protest. Congress leaders from Kokrajhar, Dhubri Chirang, and Bongaigaon districts had participated in the protest, reported Indian Express.

The protest lasted for around three hours.

Sivasagar MLA and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi was also present at the protest.

“Today met Jignesh Mevani at Kokrajhar Police Station. He is in a pretty jovial mood and is in a fighting spirit. He doesn’t seem to be tensed at all. After that protested outside the police station for his release,” Gogoi tweeted.

Terming the arrest of Mevani as another instance to crush the Opposition, Gogoi said Mevani has been vocal against the wrong-doing of the BJP before the forthcoming Gujarat Assembly election for which he was arrested, Northeast Now reported.

Manoranjan Talukdar, CPIM(M) MLA, and other left leaders also went to meet Jignesh Mevani, and were denied to meet him.

“Our comrades protested against the Government’s autocratic and undemocratic move and finally, comrades were allowed to meet Jignesh,” SFI leader Aishe Ghosh tweeted.

Earlier CPI(M) said it strongly condemns the arrest of Mevani by Assam police on bogus grounds and demands his immediate release.
